About Gridpedia

Gridpedia is an effort to create a common conceptual Smart Grid model, featuring structured as well as unstructured information. The Gridpedia project is maintained at AIFB (KIT). Please contact Andreas Wagner for questions of any sort.

The current Gridpedia model integrates various documents and models as listed below:

The NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability
In 2010 the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the United States of America published a Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid nteroperability Standards[1]. NIST's intention was to provide a high-level conceptual reference model that addresses the requirements of the Smart Grid. The NIST model is depicting the Smart Grid, its components and its interoperability demands in a top-level, holistic approach.
The MeRegio Mobil Reference Model
A Smart Grid reference model was designed by a working group for the MeRegio Mobil project[2]. The main goal of the MeRegio Mobil project is to integrate mobile electric storages (batteries in cars) into the existing energy grid, which was achieved via designing and applying ICT environments for the Smart Grid.
The Common Information Model
The Common Information Model (CIM) is an integration framework for energy providers to support the communication within a power network. It was originally developed by the Electric Power Research Institute in the USA in the mid 1990s for two main purposes: First, to simplify the sharing of power system data between companies. Second, to enable the exchanging of data between different applications within one company. The model gets revised constantly by several working groups and republished every two to five years [3]. The CIM consists of mainly two IEC standards: the IEC 61970 and the IEC 61968 [4].
The knowledge base we linked most to our reference model is DBpedia [5], a community project for extracting structured information from Wikipedia ( maintained by the University of Leipzig[6], the Free University of Berlin [7] and Open Link Software[8]).
Open Energy Information
Another knowledge source our Gridpedia model is linked to is the Open Energy Information[9]. Open Energy Information is an information-sharing community focusing mainly on the American energy market (e.g., featuring information about American companies in the energy sector).

  • - A website hosted by the German Association of Electrotechnical Engineers providing information about electrical engineering and industry standards.
  • - The IEC (International Electrotechnical Comission) is an independent international organization developing and publishing standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies.
  • - The ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is a non government standardization organization working on the telecommunications industry.
  • - A German website containing nearly all German law. It is provided by the Federal Ministry of Justice.
  • - Multispeak is a standard similar to the CIM regarding the data exchange within a electric network. It mainly focuses on energy distribution and was designed for the energy market of the USA.
  • - The CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) is a trade organization for the consumer electronics industry in the USA.
  • - The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is an international association working towards the improvement of technological innovation related to electricity.
  • - International Telecommunication Union.
  • - The Open Smart Grid Users Group.
  • American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standardizes of industrial methods in the US.
  • - An online wiki containing information about electrical installation.
