What is a lap of Autódromo Internacional do Algarve like?
The circuit near Portimão opened in 2008; Formula 1 first raced there in 2020, the first Portuguese Grand Prix since 1996 at Estoril, and returned in 2021. Formula 1 has announced a return in 2027 and 2028. The layout is known for its elevation changes and blind crests: drivers look at the sky over the crest after Turn 8, and the Turn 10-11 double right-hander has a blind entry as the track rises about 12 m, then drops about 16 m on the exit. The main straight drops downhill into the fast Turn 1 right-hander; Formula 1 used this fast version rather than the slower Turn 1 variant that GP2 used in 2009. Lewis Hamilton won the 2020 race for his 92nd Grand Prix victory, passing Michael Schumacher's record, and set the race lap record of 1:18.750.
