What is a lap of Fair Park like?
A temporary street circuit laid out inside Fair Park, the Texas State Fair grounds near downtown Dallas, for the 1984 Dallas Grand Prix, the only Formula 1 race held there. The 3.901 km course was lined with concrete walls, had two tight hairpins and several chicanes, and was the slowest track on the 1984 calendar, with average lap speeds just over 80 mph. In heat of around 40 °C the asphalt broke up over the weekend and was patched with quick-drying cement until 30 minutes before the start; only 8 of the 26 starters finished, and Nigel Mansell collapsed while pushing his Lotus to the line. Formula 1 never returned: the organising company went bankrupt in March 1985 amid financial problems and opposition from residents, a shortened course hosted a Trans-Am race in 1988, and Fair Park still hosts the State Fair of Texas.
