What is a lap of Las Vegas Street Circuit like?
A temporary circuit laid out in the car park behind the Caesars Palace hotel in Las Vegas: completely flat, lined with concrete walls and sand run-off, and folded back and forth on itself to fit the plot. It was run anticlockwise, which strained drivers' necks in the desert heat, and drivers disliked it; Alan Jones called it 'a goat track flattened out'. It hosted the season finale in 1981 and 1982, both championship deciders: Nelson Piquet clinched his first title there in 1981, and Michele Alboreto won the 1982 race for Tyrrell. Small crowds and a large loss for the hotel ended Formula 1 there after 1982; CART Indy cars raced on a 1.8 km shortened version in 1983 and 1984, and the site was later built over by the Mirage resort, a hotel extension and a shopping centre. It is unrelated to the Las Vegas Strip circuit used since 2023.
