What is a lap of Phoenix street circuit like?
A temporary street circuit in downtown Phoenix beside the Phoenix Civic Plaza, laid out on the city's street grid with tight turns and short straights; it hosted the United States Grand Prix from 1989 to 1991. The first race, in June 1989, was run in desert heat and only 6 of 26 starters finished; from 1990 the race was moved to March to avoid the summer heat. For 1991 the course was changed because the America West Arena was being built on land the original course used, shortening the lap from 3.800 km to 3.721 km; Ayrton Senna won both the 1990 and 1991 races. In October 1991 Bernie Ecclestone told the city that Formula 1 would not return, without giving a reason, and there was no further United States Grand Prix until Indianapolis in 2000.
